Canon S70 vs. Canon 350D Rebel XT
Hey Guys,
I have a beef with the settings on the Rebel XT. I have both the S70 and the XT and took them out to a wedding this weekend and found that for candid shots inside and in low light conditions the S70 beat out the XT hands down. I was using both "P" settings on both models. I chose the iso, White balance, and thats about it... But the S70 was way better at chosing the right exposure and the flash wasn't so harsh in close up scenarios. The S70 has settings to adjust the strength of the flash, but the XT doesn't seem to have that feature. I gave my S70 to this little kid at the wedding, he was about 8yrs old... and he took killer pics! He did much better just walkign around pointing and shooting then me with my big SLR. If anyone has any comments on why this happened or if they have any ideas please let me know. I feel let down... Skinny

The rebel xt should have taken better photos. It's a dslr, so you have to do things more manually. I don't know how indoor pics look with a rebel, i.e. I don't know what noise issues are as I've not really looked into that camera. But I do know the noise on the original rebel sucked ass as well.
The dslr is the big league, they expect that those who own it, are either "advanced amateurs" or "prosumer" or pro's. You'd have been better off doing everything in full manual or full auto |

What lens were you using on the XT? Check out Pez' legs and heels post. Those were shot indoors with his XT. Granted, he had an 85mm F1.8 lens...but you should have be able to get some good shots even with a so-so lens.
I wouldn't trust the P mode especially in conditions where everything isn't absolutely perfect. Going into the manual modes gives you a lot more options in less than perfect conditions ![]() |

I was using the P mode, however i was incorporating flash into it and the settings it was using for exposure sucked and it came out either too bright or under exposed. I was using the kit lens... Noise wasn't my biggest concern, it was white balance and exposure.. thanks for the feedback.

I think the Canon Rebel XT has a feature that adjusts the flash power automatically based on how close the subject in focus is, or is that just when you purchase an off camera flash? I think the features called TTL-I ( or something like that)...

The Rebel (300D) needed a hacked firmware to allow flash compensation.
The more expensive external flash units give you this feature, but the Rebel XT will do it. You just have to RTFM. ![]() |
