The 50mm f1.8 is definately a wicked lens, and incredible value. I just picked mine up yesterday, and I love it.

I've been debating about getting this lens or the f/1.4 These shots look promising.

I have the 1.8, but don't use it much because the autofocus does "hunt" a lot in low light. I have considered the 1.4 at roughly $400, but all the reviews I've read on it say that the autofocus tends to wear out just after the warranty expires. Thus, on Canon's lenses, that leaves only the 30, 50, 80, or whatever prime "L" lense, which costs over $1400. I just can't justify spending that kind of money on a prime lense. If they would fix the 50 mm f/1.4 or Sigma would produce a reliable version of it for under $400, I would go for that, but until then, I'm just waiting.

I bought the Tamron 28 to 78mm F/2.8 for under $400.00 Canadian. A bit off subject, as it's a zoom lens...But a lot of bang for the buck.
The jury is still out as far as durability goes...only time will tell. |
