Thanks for the link. I assumed that most of the kids dying in Iraq were black and hispanic. It's nice to have your assumptions checked by reality.

Of course, that was the reason I joined this board in the first place.
OK. Maybe the number two reason.

I can totally understand how one can feel alienated and paranoid in this situation, where one is surrounded by people speaking a foreign tongue. This is worsened by the fact that it's in your own native country.

If I moved to Mexico I would EXPECT to have to learn spanish. To not do so would be rude and inconsiderate to the natives to expect them to speak english for MY convenience. I expect that they make a reasonable effort when they live here and not have an attitude about it. I have personal experience in this matter since I work with the public.

And that is not meant to insult Mexicans or any other race. Every race has it's good and it's bad. That's why I cringe that my country is represented to the world by a redneck President.

But my point is Vitahappy has a right to feel human emotions without having insinuations made that he is a bigot. All he did was pretty much say that his working environment was uncomfortable. Any one of you in any race would feel the same in any combination. It's human nature, get over it.

I don't know about that. I'd like to see a further breakdown of those numbers to see how many of the white lads are from the deep south...

What's funny to me is how you guys all make it sound like its a new thing. Some phenomena that just recently happened. Latinos, blacks, asians, arabs etc..have lived on this same land for decades. Haven't we learned to cope with one another? In my life, I seriously have never encountered a racial conflict of any kind. Maybe its just you guys that live far away from states that have diversified like FL, NY, CA, TX (to name a few) that have not been able to familiriaze each other with different cultures.

I was born in Miami, FL. I went to school with hispanics, blacks, asians, whites, native americans, arabs...etc, etc. I grew up making friends with most of them. I was invited to their homes and found it real interesting how each differed.....all in good ways.

I have yet to feel the same. I work for a company that strives in hiring diversified personnel. I am in a sales group of 3 Asians, 2 whites and me the only hispanic. I have never felt uncomfortable when the Asians speak in their language...never! If they want to speak in a language i or anyone around doesnt understand, thats their business. And at times when I've been curious to know what they are talking about i ask and they tell me. NO BIGGY. We all go out for beers every tuesday after work without any racial tension.

It seems as though you guys feel threatened by people of other races and I am extremely curious as to why since I have never felt that way.

Gonja....

You said you work in a group with 3 asians...one could tolerate that, but my experiences with Mexicans are based on numbers much larger than that. Plus I have never seen Asians display the attitudes that I have seen the Mexicans display. I have been in a laundromat as the only white guy amongst about 50% Mexicans and 50% Asians and the Mexicans wetre snickering and laughing at the Asians. Meanwhile I was the only English speaking person in the establishment. Meanwhile my biggest concern is whether or not I'm going to get a dryer because both races seem to have a habit of putting only one or two garments in each dryer and taking up every dryer in the laundromat.

Personally, I don't care if you are green or purple. If a hillbilly family who lived next door came in and took up every dryer I'd feel exactly the same way. It's inconsiderate behaviour I have a bias against and if you are white, black, yellow, brown, or polka dot you can be my friend as long as you conduct yourself as a considerate human being.

Gramps hit the nail on the head when he said that racists are ignorant idiots. Furthermore I don't have the energy to spare to hate people who have never wronged me. The fallacy many people make though is that racism is a one way street, that is only white people can be racist. To me when anyone enters a country natively populated by a different race and expects that race to conform to their needs that is an example of ethocentrism. Look the word up.

I don't want to hear any arguments about what my ancestors did, I wasn't even alive back then and even if you made the argument I was responsible my ancestors came over as indentured servants and didn't have the means to oppress anyone.

And yes being in Tenneseee (but not born here) I live in the south (perhaps not DEEP SOUTH) but that doesn't qualify me a sa racist either. Wanna know why the north abolished slavery first? Because they could employ immigrants more cheaply and they didn't have to house them like they would slaves. There was no moral difference in that. Racism is everywhere, and so is thin skin.

Actually, this is what he said in his first response:

He had the wisdom to realize that he had said something ugly and stepped away from it, for which I commend him.

Vitahappy states in his profile that he lives in The Big Apple. New York City. So do I. One of the things that keeps me here is the diversity. I ride the subway in the morning and I hear Spanish, Russian, Yiddish, Hebrew, African and Indian languages, Haitian Creole. AND I LOVE IT.

All restaurant kitchens in New York, from the corner dive to the Four Seasons are majority non-english speaking. I worked in a restaurant about 10 years ago. We hired a Pakistani fellow as a dish washer. His name was Mohammed. He showed up to work six days a week and worked like a mule, scraping half-eaten food off of peoples plates for 10 hours at a stretch, and then cleaning the kitchen single-handedly at the end of the night while the rest of the staff drank at the bar. For six bucks an hour.

He didn't speak English when he got there and just like thecandid1, we had fun teaching him all sorts of disgusting and completely innapropriate things to say. Mohammad worked at the restaurant for about two years, sending money home to his wife and kids 3000 miles away. He studied English, got his taxi driving license and moved on to better paying work. I saw him two years ago. He owns his own gas station now. Tens of millions of people just like Mohammed from all over the world have helped build this country. They might not know English, but their kids will, and they'll probably be doing your taxes, filling your cavities, teaching your grandchildren, etc. in 30 years.

Know this: New York is where I live. It's my native country. And I thank God it's as diverse as it is. Funny thing is, that doesn't make me feel alienated. It makes me feel like I belong, no matter who I am, what I look like, or what I believe.

All I'm wondering is why this is being hashed out on a Candid Photography BB?
Or is this the direction the board goes in when the weather gets cold and dreary?

snappin,

I agree with you in some things, but I think it is ignorant from your behalf to generalize those mexicans behavior at the laundromat with the rest of the Mexican population or even the latino race for that matter. I am not Mexican so i do not take offense to your comment but I am sure some Mexican might.

FYI, half of my friends are African American and when we go out together and I am the only latino among them I do not feel uncomfortable. Neither do i feel uncomfortable when I go out with my white friends. Believe it or not I have lots of white friends and when I am around them i have never felt any tension. Which is why i think some of you just seriously have not gotten to know in depth people from other cultures.

What does get me a bit uncomfortable, is you generalizing. If you feel uncomfortable among mexicans, asians, or any other race...that is your personal problem. I do NOT feel the same way.

That's one of the changes that's been made. It's now Candid Photography/Current Events. Problem is you can't see the current events part of the site name with the new black skin. Still working out the glitches.
