sorry to hear this man. just before the 1 year warranty ran out on my XT, i sent it in for a repair. i told them that the shutter locks up and that i had been getting the E99 error sometimes; i had to turn the cam off and back on to get it to unlock. I was at about 80,000 pics at this point (April 2006).
they took it and cleaned it and replaced the shutter button, but not the shutter from what i saw. anyway, i am now at 130,000 shots and still going. i have not gotten the E99 error again. so it has been going well after sending it back. i am looking into the XTi though...... we'll see........

Well the 20D is off to the service center, should get there tomorrow, hopefully they contact me this week and can get it fixed ASAP.
Oh, my interview today took almost 3 hours, and they are scheduling me back for a second. Might have some $$ again sometime soon!

***UPDATE***
So I got the estimate from Canon on Thursday, $180 for Labor, $15 for shipping, but no parts quoted. Wish there was someone on the board with intimate knowledge of the inner workings of a digital SLR, so they could explain to me what happened to my cam! Anyway, I approved/paid for the work Friday morning. Now I am hopping they can ship it by Wed of next week, so that I will have it in time for next weekend when the Blue Angels are in town. On the Job front....So I had a second interview. Things seem to be going well, but I am not sure if I really want the job. These consulting company seems to be pretty sleezy, which I am not happy about. They are less about fixing customers computers, and more about selling them on long term service plans. If I wanted to do sales, I would be in sales.

Unfortunately, you're going to find that in a lot of places. If you're not comfortable with it, move on. No use taking a job that's going to make you miserable.

I hope you get your camera back in time for this next weekend. If not I've got an S2 IS you can use if you want. It's no DSLR of course but it beats nothing.

Thanks for the Offer TI, but I do have my Handy Elph s500 that is still working that I have been shooting with. So that would be adequate if I were to go out there on Sunday without my 20D.
It is looking more and more like I won't be crossing the bay on Saturday, and instead going to the California Oregon game that will be at 5pm. But I will definitely be out there on Sunday, so I hope to see you then! What do you regularly shoot with? Chris

Cool, I'll be there on Sunday for sure. I want to try and make it to the parade if I can. I shoot with the 30D and the 135/2L. I have a few other lenses but they suck compared to that one.

Yeah I have a Sigma 28-300MM lens, and it pretty much sucks next to the Canon IS 28-135MM lens that I have. Wish I could afford that Canon 28-300mm white lens... that would be awesome to have.

As with any mechanical device, shutters and the mirror mechanism are indeed moving devices. They should wear out after intense usage. I personally feel that " life of" should be listed in the specifications. I assume manufacturers dont think that their cameras get such intense usage by amature fotogs and feel the price of the camera versus parts life ratio is sufficient. There are also other factors that contribute to early wearout of mechanical parts, such as dust, humidity and temperature conditions etc. Perhaps..with more customer complaints and feedback will drive the manufacturers to include mechanical parts life cycle ratings in their literature/manuals. But..to answer your request.... here is a nice little " how cameras work" thingy for you to read. http://science.howstuffworks.com/camera.htm |
