Are sexy clothes going away?

I ask this in all seriousness, because I am the position of being able to observe my college campus, and other areas, now and compare that to a time in the early 1990's when I was a freshmen. I remember spring there as a freshmen and sophmore when I didn't own a camera, couldn't afford one, and wouldn't have had a clue how to use one. At that time, the streets were full of beautiful women in short miniskirts, shorts, halter tops, minidresses, etc. If I'd had a camera like I have now and the knowledge of how to use it, I could have come away with dozens of good street photos per sitting.

Today, I sat in my parking place near the center of the campus for about 20 minutes, alternately studying my biology text and peaking out at the scenery while waiting for my class to start. I had my camera in the back seat, but never even found a subject worthy of taking the time to attach a lens. After my class was over and it was too dark to shoot, I did see a girl in an evening dress going to a party, etc. that I would have liked a shot of. That said, the clothing styles have still gone completely boring lately. Nobody uses clothing to get out and make a statement anymore. That goes for swimwear, clubwear, and casual stuff as well. If anything is ruining the buisness of candid photography, it is this trend towards really boring clothes.

That is one reason I tend to focus more on event photography and in some cases candid beach shots. Street photograpy is just too unproductive for me. Although, I have to say again, that fashion trends have ruined the sport of tennis, which is why I don't have any shots of it. I remember as small boy sitting in the back seat of a car with my younger brother and watching some ladies play tennis in their pleated skirts and bloomers. These were just average women. One of us made the typical childish reaction of "UH OH, I just saw her underpants!". Only later did we realize they weren't really underpants, but were actually designed with the intention that they would be seen in public. I look back now and long for those days.

The bottom line here is somebody needs to tell the fashion nazis that we're in a recession, and it's time to change things up again by conserving material. What better time to do it than now, when it's warm in the spring.

First let me commend you for being such a mulit-tasker, my friend. Studying and at the same time keeping a watchful eye on potential
subjects to shoot...well KUDOS!!! I have to agree that it does seem like the really HOT subjects seem to be few and far between when street
shooting. For this reason, I really enjoy event shooting as you not only have lots of hot models to shoot, but the ladies attending these events are
usually there to flaunt their wares. I have noticed there seems to be an influx of ladies wearing sweat type pants...which I am very thankful for as
I do so love the fit. We will see what this summer brings...
