I have $500. Any opinions from anyone what would be the lens I'd like to get that would be useful in candid as well as sports photography? I shoot motocross, hockey, & baseball. I realize a 2.8 lens is the way to go, but is there something out there less expensive that is still good for the money?

How about the EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L, like I got! I can't imagine ANY lens coming close in quality for the price - e.g. B+H is selling it for $554 (US) after the rebate, and I got mine locally for $549. If you could stretch your budget a wee bit, it would be well worth it!

Take your time and give it a lot of thought . . .

70-200/4L would do you if your shooting in daylight.
If you want to shoot indoor hockey youre gonna need something faster than f4, even
faster than f2.8. To fit your budget constraint, consider going with the 85/1.8 for the
speed, and maybe a third party zoom to get the reach in daylight. Which would work
out to around $600.

I have taken a look at this one. I saw that B&H had it for that price. Do you ever do any action shots with it? If you do, how did it respond?

I was able to get decent shots during the hockey season this year, especially being that I have a f4-5.6 lens. But with a couple creative adjustments, I got alot of great shots. I was surprised. I was hoping maybe if I got a better name brand than Tamron, like say, one of the Canon lenses, that the better glass would make my shots a little better. But, unfortunately for me, I have to stay near $500. It sucks being poor.

I love my 70-200 f4L.
I've taken many photos with it and am pleased with the results.
Like DP says it is for daylight. I'll work on some photos so you can
see what you can expect from it. It is a good lens, light and durable.
If you buy it you won't be dissapointed.
I own the 85 1.8 as well, great lens too.
All of my pics are taken with these two lenses.
The 85 1.8 is very good to use indoors.

So you have the same lens as nobody? Thanks if you're able to get me some photos to check out. What kind of camera are you using it with?
Get your self a eos to m42 mount from ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=4702&item=7511827145&rd=1then
You can use M42 lens on the rebel I bought a 300mm mirror 4.5 from ebay and friends have bought 50mm 1.4f for a couple of dollars you have to use manual focus but at these prices who cares
search ebay for m42 lens and you may find an older 200 2.8 if lucky and keep looking
200mm 3.5

With that f/4.0 wide aperture, you can imagine that the shutter speeds can be pretty high in the bright sunlight, but like DP said, indoor shooting would dicatate a different choice.
I know I have some daylight action shots SOMEwhere - I'll try to find a good example and post it here . . .
And the camera body I use is a 20D . . .

My next lens will be the one nobody and Rob mentioned. I've done quite a bit of research, plus I've seen the shots from those two (and others). DP has always said the 85/1.8 is a great sports lens, so I'd very seriously consider that.

I just got the 85/1.8 today!!! its really quick on the focus, I havent looked a the test shots as of yet.....will get back to ya!! I haven't even given it a full work out yet :D
Alright great, thanks alot. Do you think the camera the lens is attached to would affect the quickness of the focus? I have a Digital Rebel, would a 10D or 20D allow the lens to be quicker, or doesn't it matter? That's the lens I'm leaning towards getting, I just want to try to be sure it will work for me.
