Video: Police Handcuffed 5-Year-Old Girl
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - A 5-year-old girl was handcuffed by police after she tore papers off a bulletin board and punched an assistant principal in kindergarten class, according to a video released by a lawyer for the child's mother.
The 30-minute tape shows the child appearing to calm down before three officers pinned her arms behind her back and put on handcuffs as she screamed, "No!"
The camera was rolling March 14 as part of a classroom self-improvement exercise at Fairmount Park Elementary, attorney John Trevena said.
Trevena, who provided the tape to the media this week, said he got it from police.
"The image itself will be seared into people's minds when you have three police officers bending a child over a table and forcibly handcuffing her," said Trevena, who represents the girl's mother, Inga Akins.
Police spokesman Bill Proffitt said an investigation into the matter would be complete in about two weeks and the findings would be made public.

What the fuck? What kind of asshole do you have to be to bend a 5 year old girl over a table, pin her down and hadcuff her??? And it took 3 officers to take her down??? I understand that she punched the VP and was out of control... but it says she was calming down before they attacked her! Yes she should be punished for the way she acted... but having 3 grown men physically take her down and cuff her? At 5 years old?
This world is fucked up sometimes!

If it takes three grown men to pin down a 5-year-old girl, that police department better start developing a better training program. Makes you wonder who many it would take to hold down a big dude high angel dust...

i must opine here..... I saw the entire video of the incident and this girl was out of control. She destroyed 3 different rooms of the school by breaking everything in sight, throwing objects at people and phsyically striking 3 different adults were were nothing but professional and compassionate towards her. The child broke about 200 laws. The school employees are not allowed by law to restrain or touch children and anyway and they didnt. the child repeatedly ignored pleas and demands by the school officials over the course of 5 hours to calm down and stop her rampage. School officals tried to contact the girls mother first (instead of calling the police) but the mother was not available. The girls father is not known. The only resort the school had was to call police and stop this girl from vandalising and destroying school property as well as stop her from assaulting school officials. When police arrived they tried for almost 15 minutes to calmly ask the girl to come with them and speak with them and the girl refused. At was at that point she was taken into custody and from watching the video she was treated extremely well, depsite her resisting the police. There were 2 men and one women police officer.
The disturbing part of this video is the how children in America today dont respect authority and obey the law. Even more disturbing is how young they are. It is obvious fromt his video the need for TWO parents in a household to instil descipline and respect. This girl was given multiple opportunities to end the situation correctly and she refused every chance. Unfortunately the only option left was to restrain her by law enforcement to protect herself and those around her. She was not arrested.
It wasnt pleasent to see a young child being handcuffed but sadly it was warrented in this case, in my humble opinion.

Sorry bro,
But I gotta call this as bullshit.
My mother raised four boys and we never would have this problem, EVER. What it breaks down to is the ability to be a parent. Half the parents today are children as it is, (16-24). A baby can't raise a baby.

70% of black children today are born out of wedlock. This is the #1 reason for the plight of blacks in America. A child is best raised by TWO parents. Although someone can always point to an exception to the rule. In fact children CAN raise children. From 1900-1965 the average age of mothers in America was 19. During that time only 15% of children in America were born out of wedlock. From 1965-2000 the average age of a mother was 24 but illegitamate children made up 35% of births. Which time period has more crime ?
Children from families with no father are about 15 times more likely to be involved in crime and drugs. That is a FACT.

IMO...the school shouldn't have called the police, that is ridiculous!! They should've called the parents!

Are we really wanting to go down this route?
As a black man, I can point to a lot of exceptions to this rule of yours. I'm not saying your statistics are incorrect, but I do not believe for one second they are 100% accurate. There is no way to tell if they are. I know my mother was never polled and shes a black woman that raised four men.
I know complete familes (mom+dad) who have peices of shits for kids.
You can NOT compair 1900-1965 to today. With the internet, porn and music as it is, thats an asinine compair and contrast.

repost from NNB's..lol
I dont care...bad parenting or not...those cops had no right to handcuff that little girl....
I mean, come on, what damage can a 5 yo do? ( ok, i will concede to getting a punch in the balls or a kick in the leg, but still...lol)
I can envision the 911 call...
911 operator------Whats is the emergency ma'am?
School--------We have a 5 yo girl swinging her fists at a teacher and having a tantrum.
911 op----------please remain calm...homeland security and the media have been notified......
School------please hurry...she is threatening the school hamster !!!!!
911 op-----OK ma'am...please remain calm and film her with your handy cam
School...yes 911..we just happen to have had one turned on, we are filming her now
911 op-----Very good ma'am,.....Sheriff Burnell has been notified..in the mean time give her a cookie to calm her down.
School------we tried that, but we think she has to go potty
911 op------please take her to the toidy..we dont want her crapping up the police car when we throw her in the back of it.
911 op-----CNN has been notified also ma'am
School------thank you..please hurry.....her nose is running profusely now
911 op------any word on the hampster?

Candid - if you watch the entire video you will see how much damage a 5 yr old DID do. Also, I am not saying she had to be handcuffed, I am merely stating it wasnt out of line. As far as the issue of her "parents"..she only has one, a mother. When the school tried to contact the mother she wasnt available. The only recourse the school had at the time was to contact the police.
Boss - The statistics I am quoteing are from various sources such as Dept of Health and Human services, Dept Of justice and so on. These stats come not from polls but from objectively compiled statistics which arent derived from polls. National crime statistics dont come from polls. National birth rates dont come from polls.

Dude, you gotta lay off the mass doses of Bill O'Reilly or at least don't quote him verbatem without checking the facts yourself. I wouldn't have played the race card so fast either. You could have left "black" out of your statement and probably wouldn't have came off sounding like .... O'Reilly. If you had worked in a Ludacris jab it would have really blown your cover.
It is obvious fromt his video the need for TWO parents in a household to instil descipline and respect.
I don't have any idea how you can correlate this child's behavior with her only having one parent. Yes, I agree that there is a parenting problem but it's got nothing to do with the fact that she's raising the child on her own. She's just a lousy parent.
But I gotta call this as bullshit.
Right on, again, Boss. It's tougher for a single parent but I know plenty of single parents that raised well behaved and well adjusted children. It's about parenting -- not parent(s).
I happen to think that the cops resorted to handcuffing this child because they had no other means of restraining her. If they had simply stood aside and watched her tear up taxpayer funded school property and let her possibly hurt herself, then everyone would have been up in arms about how they let her hurt herself and stood by watching her.
As far as placing the cuffs on a child, it wasn't like they spun her around, slammed her face down on her little desk, squeezed the cuffs on until her wrists bled and frog marched her down the steps of the school and threw her into the back of a squad car. I thought the cops exercised restraint and tried to be as delicate and tried as best as they could not to hurt the girl.
I'm sure that the liberal press fed this story out to the news wires along with some 'Bush did this, Bush did that. Bush is bad' story just so someone could equate Bush + cuffs + child = bad America. I'll bet only the cuffing part of the video was shown and written about.
It's sad that the cops had to cuff a child in a school because everyone else was barred by law or afraid that they would have been sued (which was validated by the mother's actions at the conclusion of the incident) if they tried to restrain the girl. Personally, I would have put her in a bear hug and sat down with her until the rubber lined van arrived -- but I don't blame the cops for what they did.
Now, can't we all just get along :)

Keep in mind people; it’s not just having 2 parents that make a kid a good kid or a bad kid. There are tons of factors; most parents these days don’t know the first thing about raising children. A lot of parents are BOTH busy working and the kids don’t get enough attention or love at home.
The best solution is probably the traditional mother at home (most of the time) and father working to support the family kind of thing.
This kid probably had some major issues, her mother probably hasn’t been paying enough attention to her, or it wouldn't have escalated to her freaking out like that.
Single parented kids could turn out very good if they are well taken care of.
I've been researching serial killers lately, and a lot of them had very bad parents, or just had really weird or abusive relationships with them.
I don’t know who this girl is, because the news link thing is broken, but from what I’ve read, Id keep an eye out for this girl. If she doesn't get help she may turn out to be the next serial killer :teeth: *although most serial killers are male*
Alritey IM tired, hopefully this made sense :)

Now that the emotional furor has lowered, what most folks don't realize, and what most media does not report (they mostly repeat and pimp sensational headlines) is that Fairmount Elementary is no ordinary school, and that wasn't an ordinary 5 year old.
Besides being an elemenary school it's also a special school for students with emotional and behavioral problems, some so severe that they need to be taken out of the normal school system. The next level above this is an actual psych hospital. This girl had Down syndrome which brings a host of problems including mental retardation.
My wife is a very caring professional in this field who works doggedly in her client's interests and saw nothing outrageous in this occurence, although she believes that better training and some bear-hug restraints on the staff's part could have negated the need for the girl to be put into temporary protective custody.
She's seen much worse tantrums in these facilities, some requiring actual physical restraint and sedation to protect the kid and staff. In addition she's been slugged in the head and seen other staff around her sent to the hospital with bites and bruises from punches and chairs being thrown by these kids during a tantrum. A simple bite from a kid can really f*** you up with hepetitis and other blood infections.
'Nuff said, here's a link for the place fyi.
