I have a Canon Digital Rebel. I tried being Joe Professional today and decided to shoot images at a baseball game in the RAW format. I have about 135 shots total. When I got back home to put them on the computer, the only thing visible are icons, no images. WHAT THE FUCK!!!!!!! I downloaded all of them into a folder, but can't open them up. Computer says it can't read the file. I put the CF card back in the camera and I can still view them on the camera. I hooked the camera directly to the computer, and I can view them (small though) while the camera is connected, but I can't enlarge them. I tried downloading straight from the camera, but when all was said and done, the folder that I put them into, when I try to open up the photos, it won't work, says it can't read the file. Can anyone help me with this problem? If I can still see the images when the card is back in the camera, are the images still able to be downloaded to my computer? It seems as though the computer is acting like they have been corrupted. I can still view them through the camera though. I am calling on all the knowledge that I know is available from all the great photographers on this site. If you can help me to get these photos on my computer safely, I promise I won't fuck with RAW images again, until I fully understand the whole RAW image thing. HELP!!!!!!!
your camera came with a few disks...didnt it?
load them into your computer, especially the one with the RAW software on it.....
i think that is what you need...nu?
If you dont have the disks for whatever reason....
you can get the drivers and file viewing utilities at canons site and via this link....

Also...ACDSee 7 comes with RAW support.....
if all this fails, you could just cook the files first.....

Shark - dont worry, nothing is broken. .RAW is a format most programs dont read so you need special software to open the files and view them. You should have some software that came with the camera. If not then use the links above.

I got it. I had my computer reformatted recently and forgot to reload my camera software. Once I did that, it was working ok. I don't see any difference between the RAW images and jpegs. I thought the RAW format would give me excellent looking shots. Maybe I'm not seeing it that way tonight. Maybe I don't really understand what the RAW format is best used for. I'll check them out again tomorrow. I want to thank you both for your help with my little dilemma. I appreciate it that someone took the time to offer their knowledge to help me out. I'll try to start posting the "saved" images tomorrow after work. After all the stressing these past couple hours, I'm drained, so I need to go to bed now. Catch ya' later. Thanks again guys.
OK..im learning also here, and I'm using your post as a springboard.
RAW to me means " the actual image"
Think of it as your camera actually sucking in the image magically to your cam, so if you were to pour it out, it would come back in all its original glory.....
RAW captures an image in its entirety..in other words, it captures each and every pixel exactly as they are seen by the camera.
JPEG captures the scene, but all jpeg images are digitally reshaped via the software code..they look the same, but the info is different.
You cannot really " edit " a jpeg, because the original image has been processed, or reshaped as it may...
but RAW can be fully manipulated as each and every pixel is the original one instead of a compressed, altered file.
Thats why RAW files are so huge...often to the limit of your MP capacity.
Heres a link to PDF file from Photoshop explaining RAW

OK thanks, I'll check it out to find out more about it, and see if it's something I want to look into to keep shooting that way. I wonder if alot of guys on this board shoot that way?

I think there are a few people who shoot RAW (deliriouspixel maybe?). A lot of people don't because of the time it takes converting them, and also the amount of memory it takes to shoot in RAW format.

That's true, I go from 300 photos on my CF card in large format, down to 135 photos in RAW.

If you've a good workflow it's easy like to edit .jpg's after a while but it's true:
you need a lot of memory space when you shot ONLY in RAW!
I do it that way:
I put the settings on my cam at RAW, when i see that i could have a problem with the next shots.
Even for candids........ but i don't shoot all the pics that way.
I've now 10Gb in CF cards and that's not enough for a whole day, when it's a good hunt.
I own also a portable storage with 20Gb but it needs to much time to copy.
For a 1Gb Microdrive i neeed about aprox. 20 minutes. So, it's impossible for
me to stop and transfer one of my 4Gb cards: i lost tooooo much time!
If i'm shooting the regular pics, i shoot only in RAW.
