As per Archman's request I will be giving everybody a detailed critic of my new 30D...........In a few more days of shooting BUT

Right off the top. Comparing it to any other Canon dSLR I have used (1D, 1D II, 10D, dRebel) it is damn fast at startup. You flip the switch and before your eyes get to the display it is ready to fire! How many shots have I missed over the years because of AUTO-OFF....Well, a shitload.

The other great thing is the burst mode..... Setup to shoot large fine jpegs, it still squeezes out 2-3 fps.

One (very small) drawback is the light body (I dont care much about how heavy a camera is)... As DP would tell you, the shutter is a little bit loud. So if you're a sneaky shooter, this may not be the match your looking for.

I'll give you all some detailed reviews of it after I test it out a bit more.

looking forward to the review. i held one at the store the other day and now i am waiting to see if the xt comes out with an upgrade in the next month of so. if not, or if it is a minor upgrade, i think i will be moving up to the 30d as an xmas present to myself.

Or get faster CF card? Does it matter? I haven't tested it other than San Disk Ultra III Extreme. Is the camera's buffer large enough to still get 5fps burst without fastest possible card?

I remember reading a test about this and think it was about twice longer time with Ultra II card to get cam ready after filling the buffer than with Ultra III card... this means the time for buffer memory to empty itself to CF card.

DP......Good Idea! But you're still a wise-ass, hahaha. OK so now it shoots 5 FPS.

And RT, you're on to something too. It'll burst at 5 until the writing slows it down. I switched out my normal x80 Lexar and put an older x32 in and it slowed down after about 5-6 shots but then lowering the res. from FINE to STANDARD caused it to jump back up

I think you should really get a faster card than Lexar 80x card. That's only about 12MB/Sec. With Lexar 133X or San Disk Ultra III cards you get about 20MB/Sec write speed... and I still think even those slow down the burst. Just calculate yourself 5 times the filesize you're shooting with. If it's less than card's write speed, you're doing fine.

So, I've known this for quite a while by now, sorry I havent gotten back to this sooner.

It must have been another setting I had wrong on that rascal. I cleared all the data, started over and now it'll go 35-40 jpegs before the slower card slows it down.:o And I only know this cause I sat there and let it fly. I cant say I have ever in my life needed to shoot more then say 15 continous. Canon says it'll shoot 11 raw or 30 low compression jpegs. I would agree for the most part with that statement as I havent actually tried higher ISO's yet in a testing fashion. 800 & up. Now that I think about it, might have been 250 or 200. Not really sure.

But I'll say so far in my most common situations, I havent had a problem. 200-400 ISO.

It's been great.
