so i know i mentioned to a few o you that i was spending two weeks in europe after christmas. So, liike, before i left, i made sure to shut down my computer and disconnect it from the wall, so as to be sure that it wouldn't be fucked up when i got back. So i spend two great weeks in europe (London, Munich, Salzburg), come back on Monday, hit the hay after being awake for 24 hours, wake up on Tuesday, turn on my computer, and bam. it starts up windows fine, but the login screen doesn't come up. it says LSASS.exe has encountered an error and needs to close. That wouldn't be so bad if LSASS wasn't a critical system process. so i was stuck in an infinite restart loop. eventually after about 4 or 5 times of this i started up in safe mode and it was fine. i went through a few diagnostic things, played around with windows recovery console, narrowed it down to the fact that something in my registry got messed up. Now, i know a lot of you will jump to the Sasser Worm conclusion, but this wasn't the Sasser worm, as the system had not even loaded yet. (But i ran the sasser removal tool anyway, just to be sure, to no avail) So after about four hours of frustration, i decided to just reinstall windows, which isn't so bad because on my C: drive, ALL i have is windows. I have 4 physical hard drives, C: being the smallest and only containing the operating system. So i go ahead and repartition and reformat, blah blah blah, and my shit is running ok UNTIL i try to run anything which requires a cd key. I forgot to back up the specific parts of the registry that include all that stuff. i know i had thought to do it, but i completely forgot when the time came. The only game/program i can open is World or Warcraft. And i need photoshop to play with the 800 pictures i brought back from Europe! And i have LOTS more games and progs heh.
I'm still wondering how my registry became corrupted whilst my computer was powered down.
Bollocks.
That's gonna be a lot of reinstalling.
c'est la vie.
