I'd recommend using Adobe Premiere Pro.
It's very easy to learn, and fairl powerful.
I find it's great for cutting and pasting scenes,
adding transitions, and mixing in music from
a secondary source. If you're planning on
using it to edit/post candid videos here, it should
be all you need.

are you on dv or high8? i have the adobe preimiere and it looks like a pretty good solid program but i havent used it much myself. unless you can get it from a friend of something, it'll cost a lot to buy and same goes for avid. i personally like Avid a lot. it's what the pros use for their big budget stuff. actually windows media maker is a nice program to start with AND it's free i think.

I've heared some good stuff about avid. I've visited the avid site, but could not find a demo and it's very expensive program

Thought is a simple program, the quality you got in VirtualDub mainly depends on the codec and settings you use

For mpeg, the simple and cheap program I use is TMPGEnc
